A man who killed his best friend in a jealous fit of rage, blamed his girlfriend for the murder.
The George Washington University grad student was convicted of murdering his friend after jurors did not believe his defense. He claimed that his girlfriend killed the man.
Rahul Gupta, 25, suspected that his girlfriend was cheating on him with his best friend, 24-year-old Mark Waugh, who was a law student, prosecutors in Maryland said.
The jury heard that Gupta, confronted his longtime friend after a night of drinking.
He, his girlfriend Taylor Gould, and the victim, had been celebrating Gupta's birthday before returning to his apartment in Silver Springs.
Gupta stabbed and cut Waugh. When police arrived, Gupta confessed to the crime and he was found covered in blood.
”My girlfriend and my friend were cheating,” he told police.
Gupta later changed his story and said that his girlfriend killed the victim, but he wanted to cover for her.
Gould, who was also bloody, said that she was too drunk and could not remember what happened that night.
However, a jail phone call recorded between Gupta and his father helped convict him of murder.
“Mark and I had a fight, he tried to get a knife, and then I got a knife,” Gupta told his father.
Jurors took less than five hours to convict Gupta of murder. He faces life in prison.
